What is The Happy Dad Project?

Every dad is different, every family is different and we all experience the world in own way, but one thing seems to be true... we want our kids to be safe and happy, and most of us would like that for ourselves too!

As a therapist and a coach who was struggling with the challenges of fatherhood, I created my Happy Dad Project as a self-coaching program to help me.

Since then the program has evolved into something that can be used by any dad and it's all about helping you to embrace fatherhood with greater clarity, courage and confidence and create a happier environment for you and your family.

What makes The Happy Dad Project so special?

As a coach and therapist, I found myself working with an increasing number of dads who are struggling with the challenges of fatherhood.

There are more and more self-help resources and support groups for dads. However, even with this support, many dads still find it hard to create the momentum needed to make significant and sustainable change without some external guidance. The Happy Dad Project is pretty rare in that it is a dedicated 1:1 coaching program focused on meeting the needs of dads.

Do you only work with dads?

My focus is working with dads, but dads are part of a family unit and I often work with other members of that family unit. Basically if something is having a negative impact on the family dynamic and placing greater pressure on fathers, I may be able to help.

For example, I work with young adults who may be struggling with anger issues or running negative patterns of behaviour. My work with mums often focuses on weight loss, exercise and alcohol consumption.

Are you a parenting expert?

Outside of my own experience of being a parent I am not a trained parenting expert or super guru (just ask my own kids) and I can't promise to transform you into the bestesterest dad ever.

However, regardless of my level of parenting expertise, I can use my experience as a coach and therapist to help you shape and navigate your own unique pathway through fatherhood. You can get an understanding of how we can work through this together by reading more about my approach and what you can expect.

What are the key differences between therapy and coaching?

Focus:

  • Therapy: Focuses on healing past wounds, addressing emotional distress, and resolving psychological issues.
  • Coaching: Focuses on present and future goals, enhancing performance, and developing skills.

Time Orientation:

  • Therapy: Often explores past experiences to understand current challenges.
  • Coaching: Primarily concentrates on current actions and future outcomes.

Professional Scope:

  • Therapy: Conducted by licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, counselors, etc.) who can diagnose and treat mental health disorders.
  • Coaching: Conducted by trained professionals who guide individuals toward personal or professional goals, but do not diagnose or treat mental illness.

Problem vs. Goal:

  • Therapy: Often problem focused, working to resolve or alleviate psychological pain.
  • Coaching: Generally goal focused, working to achieve a desired outcome.

Medical Model vs. Developmental Model:

  • Therapy: Often uses a medical model, where the therapist is the expert, and the client is the patient.
  • Coaching: Uses a developmental model, where the client is the expert of their own life, and the coach is a facilitator.

How long does it take for me to see a benefit or experience any change from coaching?

Rapid Results Coaching is one of the fastest ways to change behaviour. Typically we work with a program lasting 8 sessions. This could be done in a single day, but is typically spread over 4 to 8 weeks.

However, most people say that they experience a significant improvement or change during their first session.

Is coaching safe?

When conducted by a trained coach, coaching is considered a very safe process for most people, unless they have a severe mental illness.

Throughout your Big Dadventure coaching you are always in control, always conscious and always able to stop the session if you are not comfortable with how things are progressing.

Does Rapid Results Coaching work for children and teenagers?

This dynamic approach works well for clients of all ages, from all kinds of backgrounds at home, at work, at school and anywhere else in between. As family is a critical component of fatherhood, I often work with teens and young adults.

When working with anyone under the age of 18, I will need parental consent and will ask for a parent or guardian to be present at one or more of the sessions, depending on how things are progressing.

Why do people ask if you'll turn them into a chicken?

As soon as people hear I am a qualified hypnotherapist I am often asked: "Will you turn me into a chicken?" That's because most people's understanding or experience of hypnosis is what they see on TV or in movies where hypnosis is used to entertain an audience. But that's different, that's 'stage hypnosis'.

The hypnosis I am trained in is 'clinical hypnosis' or 'hypnotherapy' and it is used one-on-one to fast track and embed behavioural change in an individual. During hypnotherapy you are in a relaxed but highly focused state. You are always in control and you can stop the process should you wish to.

These days, in my coaching work, I use guided meditation and breathing exercises. So no, I will not turn you into a chicken or make you dance like Elvis (unless those activities are actually one of your wellbeing, performance or personal growth goals).
